Based on my understanding of the demographic here on SN, I think most of us were around for the 90s internet. And I venture to guess most of us have a bit of a nostalgic longing for the unpretentious, goofy nature of it. You know, the cringey Geocities style personal websites that look something like this:
Yeah, well that's pretty much what this game is all about.
You play as a moderator for the platform that hosts these sites. You're tasked with finding and taking down content that violates copyright, is abusive towards others, and---in a move that's sure to draw a smile from bitcoiners---any payment methods that don't use the company's fake internal currency.
While playing as a moderator may not seem like fun, a mystery eventually unravels which sees you increasingly exploring the darker side of the web, engaging in hacker-like activities, and trying to uncover a conspiracy at the heart of the entire web.
At its core, Hypnospace Outlaw is an open-ended deduction game. You explore the internet freely as if you were operating a real OS, with its own BIOS settings and terminal you can tinker with (though it's not necessary for finishing the game). Uncovering the game's various mysteries will require a sharp attention to detail and logical mind as you gradually learn about the various people on the web through their postings, and you gradually track down obscure and unlisted sites to uncover more information. The game doesn't hold your hand--you really have to figure things out yourself. I found myself jotting down notes as I was playing, so I could remember certain details that might prove crucial later.
Hypnospace Outlaw is a game I'd recommend to people who are patient and enjoy solving logic puzzles and mysteries, and who have a nostalgia for the 90s internet. If you don't fall into either of those categories, you might not find much to enjoy in the game, but if you fall into both categories, you'll probably get a kick out of this game.
more than ever i miss the wild west-esque nature of the internet from late 90s early 2000s
great times, no endless tracking, no influencers, classic old forums and napster / limewire
the forum vibe i get from SN i why i like it so much, actually
yeah, it feels like a time when things were more authentic, not everything was done so self-consciously with an audience in mind. You put random tank gifs on your page because you thought tanks were freakin' cool, not because you were trying to sell something or influence anyone.
And reading this is like sipping a cold drink on a hot summer day. Very soothing. Love the measured tone
do you ever play video games?
This seems well tailored for you
I've mostly been playing games like this recently. I'm glad we're living in an era where these kind of niche games are financially sustainable
