Strange style. It feels ChatGPT-ish to me with those short sentences. I passed it through some detectors, some indicate that an AI was used for some parts. That in combination with not using regular story formatting (conversations) for stories is suspect. I could be wrong.

Ai, use it for editing. Fresh eyes. Short sentences, mine.

Conversations, lifting McCarthy. Reading a lot of his work lately. But in all honesty its out of laziness.

Then I guess it would help if you put in quotation marks for the dialogue. Now it's unclear whether it's narration or spoken words. Similar with the short words, I'd say. In some cases they work, in others it increases confusion.
