Oh it is wild. The only part about it that I have ever "accepted" is that the desk does help coordinate flight changes when votes move, so if a Member needs to fly our later or come back to DC earlier, they are normally able to figure out how to get them to DC to vote.
I had a friend who was a scheduler for two decades in the Senate, and before the desk, essentially what these people would do was book a half a dozen flights and then cancel the ones that they didn't need at the last moment. It wasnt good for the airlines nor other travels.
