I just committed to attend five baseball games in a row at the end of May. I usually go to one game a year, but this is special. A group of my old college buddies is planning our first big get together in 40 years. It's easier to get everyone to commit now that we're all retired. One of our friends has some serious health issues, so we're going to all travel to Cleveland, his home, for three of the games. The other two will be in Pittsburgh. Lately I get anxiety planning any kind of travel, but now that the details have been worked out I'm starting to get excited.
There will be lots of reminiscing, I'm sure, and the alcohol will flow among those of us not (yet) in a twelve step program. The games themselves may be incidental. We have lost a few guys over the years. It will likely be the last time this particular group of friends will all be together. That's okay. We'll laugh about that and bet on which one of us will be the next to croak.
Sounds great. PNC in Pittsburgh is my favourite park in MLB. You will love it. And the Pirates are on the upswing.
Guardians always seem to have a competitive team as well.
Who are the Guardians and Pirates playing against when you are going?
Red Sox. Most of the guys are from Massachusetts. I'll root for the Pirates and Guardians that week. I am looking forward to PNC Park. I have wanted to catch a game there for a while.
Hopefully the weather is good and the Red Sox lose every game. Haha
I was mistaken. I think the Pirates are playing the Cubs the first two games in Pittsburgh. I can't root for either of those two. I thought the Sox were in Pitt then Cleveland.
Division rivals. Nice. Went I went to Pittsburgh I saw two games against the Cardinals. I enjoyed the city as well. Stayed walking distance to the ballpark.
That's what I'm planning to do. One of the guys is from Pittsburgh. I saw a Penguins game with him right after the new arena was built. We had a great time in the city. We were planning a PNC game for a few years, but never could make it work. I went with two of the other guys on a road trip to see an Indians game when the Jake opened, and then we drove to Detroit for a game at the old Tigers Stadium the season before it got torn down.
I was hoping to go to Detroit last summer but couldn't coordinate schedules with the buddy I planned on going with. We were trying to go when the Jays were in town. That same friend of mine is going to Japan next month and he is planning to catch an NPB game while there.
I would like to see a game in Japan. I just discovered that league has been around since 1950? I wonder if US influence postwar was involved.
