how much of that was due to unionization vs the natural equilibrium working hours?

My recollection is that working hours were trending downwards independent of unionization and that trend actually stalls out when the 40-hour week became codified, but I don't recall the details on that.
Perhaps Keynes would have been right if not for stupid government interventions.
