Let me cut to the chase.

I teach sixth graders but they don’t behave their age. A girl and a boy were involved in a quibble and exchanging heated words. I told the boy to let it go and return to his seat. He has a history of ADHD, which requires him to take medication. He exploded and flipped the desk and threw a chair.

The chair hit another student on the forehead. The victim had to go down to the general office to get an ice pack. Thankfully, he wasn’t injured.

Had to call the victim’s mother to explain the incident. Hopefully, she doesn’t complain to the school leaders about me.

During my lesson with the fourth graders, a boy was throwing paper balls at another student. I grabbed his chair. Thing is, I grabbed it so hard that he fell to the ground.

The class gasped. I carried on with the rest of the lesson. I hoped that the boy doesn’t go home and complain to his mother.

Sigh. I hope I don’t lose my job because of such mishaps. lol

Those are both rough ages to deal with kids, but 6th grade is probably the more volatile. Interestingly, girls internalize and boys explode externally. Most of it is due to excess energy they need to work off. This is why, and I'm not a big athletics fan per se, required sports in school makes a difference. It forms teamwork skills and it burns off a lot of excess energy that gets into trouble at that age.

thanks for your perspective. I think it helps that you have pointed out that kids have alway been like this. prevents me from going down the rabbit hole of thinking - that kids these days are overly stimulated, need a consistent rush of dopamine from their electronic devices etc

Ah, that sucks.

How does Singapore handle neurodivergent kids in school? I can tell you a lot about it from the US perspective.

let me gather my thoughts on this and get back to you over the weekend. Will tag you

Rough day. It happens. Cut yourself some slack for being human.

To quote from the endless wisdom of Monty Python:

Worse things happen at sea, you know?
