Some see history as the overall narrative we need to make sense of our lives. For others it is science, and some claim it is religion or philosophy.

Richard Dawkins declared "Science is the poetry of reality," while Auguste Comte claimed that "to understand a science, it is necessary to know its history." Thucydides argued that behind all history is philosophy: "History is philosophy teaching by example."

Which grand narrative is most significant in how we live our lives, and is it necessary to choose between them?

Erm I think the narrative that gives me the most clarity and sense of purpose is parenthood. My physical and emotional lives revolve around my child

A pertinent question. My view is people have been telling themselves many of the same stories for centuries.

and is it necessary to choose between them?

I don't think you must, but many do. I am increasingly interested in knowing those told by my ancestors, and even those of people who have been living in my part of the world. Strange expressions of these stories appear in my very sinews.
