pioneers envisioned a free decentralised private communication network, but what we got was Google, Meta and AWS, sure the internet protocol TCP/IP is still today a global decentralised network but what got built on top is how the public interact with it
It's still decentralized. The public actively chooses to become (or stay) those services' products.
Also, I'm not so sure on the private bit as being part of the initial vision. https wasn't there from day 1, it took a long while to be introduced by Netscape.
