Thank you Saint Martin’s Press for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A breaker of hearts and ruiner of your faves is what Ann Liang does best in her adult books. A story pertaining to Gods of The Heavens, and the mortals which live below them, To Dream In Darkness was essentially a chinese romantasy with elements of Wuxia and it reminded me alot of the japanese movie, _Your Name_.
Rujia and Keran are the gods of life and death who fall hopelessly in love despite their opposing circumstances. They were fun to read about and their character dynamic was solid individually and as well as together. The writing was beautiful, and so was the worldbuilding.
The main gimmicks this was a 3.5-4 because it didn’t feel as original as I was hoping for. It felt a but predictable based on what her adult debut’s plot was, and the pacing of the book didn’t start picking up until about 55% of the way through.
Overall, another pretty solid read from Ann and will read anything by her!
