I've been seeing this occur when attempting to have Cash App pay an LN invoice from Blink.sv wallet.

I first thought Cash App might be having LN payments issues, but have no problem paying LN invoices from Cash App to other LN nodes.

I then thought this might be a liquidity issue maybe, but then I tried amounts between 50K sats down to 100 sats -- all failed with this "Sorry, ..." message.

I'm having no issue paying a Blink.sv wallet, same amounts, from several other wallets and services, so this is only Cash App --> Blink.sv issue.

Oh, then I tried Cash App paying to Wallet of Satoshi, same thing ... failed.

Is Cash App no longer supporting certain wallets, or something? Or just something specifically for Cash App to Blink.sv and WalletOfSatoshi ?

Would there be anyone willing to try and confirm this behavior with Blink.sv and/or WalletOfSatoshi wallet?

Do you have any control over the fee rate? Some LN routes are more expensive than the others, and if the fee is borne by Cash App they may have a maximum fee rate limit. Or if it is borne by clients, the default may be too low.

reply

Cash App provides no payment parameters such as fee rate.

I don't think it is fee rate because it is paying LN invoices from numerous other LN nodes, just not those for KYC-free wallets.

reply

You can test this theory with coinos.pro wallet. It is KYC-free, but less known.

reply

Thank you!!!

CoinOS.Pro ... that's more ammo ...

"Sorry, your withdrawal could not be processed"

(For an amount under $1 even.)

This is not smoke anymore ... I think I'm seeing fire. I am still able to use Cash App to pay several LN invoices from other services, just not these KYC-free wallet ones.

reply

Ok, some progress.

I was using Cash (USD) as the source of funds, and not BTC/sats. I've never had it care which was the source of funds since they added payment to be funded from your USD balance.

Now when I buy bitcoin and then try to pay the LN invoice using my sats as funding source, I got a small payment (for just cents) to complete successfully, on CoinOS.io. But still not working for any LN payment, from Cash App to Blink.sv wallet,

I'm just confused now and tired. I'll take another look in the morning. So maybe it really is a liquidity issue or something.

reply

With Blink.sv wallet, Cash App now isn't even giving me the chance to confirm that I want to pay the LN invoice. I simply Paste and then it goes straight to the Sorry, your withdrawal could not be processed. At least that is that way when paying from my USD wallet. Paying in sats (i.e., from BTC balance), it at least gets past the Confirm (enter PIN) part.

This certainly seems like some type of blacklist. Either Blink, or ... maybe me?

Update: Figured it out. Cash App won't pay LN Invoices < $1 when paying with USD balance: #1502321

reply

So all larger ln payments now work?

More likely, white list of acceptable nodes. Kraken also started charging 0.3% for LN BTC deposits, where was 0% fee before. War on privacy.

reply

Keep us posted on this one. I'm very curious to see if a custodial provider like CashApp is selectively paying ln invoices based on originating wallet.

Still no joy on

  • Cash App --> Blink.sv

and now same issue when I tried to do a Cash App payment to pay an LN invoice from mint.minibits.cash

Hey @cointastical I work on lightning payments at Cash App. I just tried paying Blink.sv from Cash App and got the same "Sorry, ..." message.

I checked the logs and our lightning nodes can't find a payment path to the Blink.sv receiving node (https://mempool.space/lightning/node/029fc6217803748cc8fb6b041acbe81e6e295a914487dcea7e5d7e141b64883826). We have 10M sats in local capacity to the Blink routing node (https://mempool.space/lightning/node/02dfb4c1dd59216fa6a28d0f012e188516f63517db68c4e4b82c3af41343a05bc4), so we should be able to send payments there no problem. So I think the issue is that Blink is not managing the liquidity between their routing node and their receiving nodes. I would recommend reaching out to their support to flag this issue.

If you have any more issues with lightning payments on Cash App feel free to reach out to me on SN or nostr: npub1tw00dgmtr0afe398y354yk6vtf4k8nv264zlpx3s5l8kvjz40d7qrukly0

As of today I am once again able to pay, using my Cash App, an LN invoice from Blink.sv, mint.minibits.com, etc. -- but only when I have a sufficient BTC balance.

Paying from my USD balance (i.e., when my Cash App BTC wallet balance is 0 or less than the amount of sats for the LN invoice), then I don't even get to the Confirm (i.e., enter PIN) step before seeing the "Sorry, your [...]" message.

So if it was a liquidity issue -- that now appears to have been resolved, at least for the (very small size) amounts I'm using for testing (all between 100 sats and 500 sats).

There remains what is, presumably, a regression I'm experiencing with Cash App where the LN invoice would be paid with USD that behaves differently than when the LN invoice would be paid with sats (BTC). This is on Android, Cash App v5.53.0.

For the "pay from USD balance", do you have dollars already on Cash App or is it trying to pull from your bank account? If the latter it could be your bank declining the transaction. We have a fix coming soon to give more specific feedback on failure for dollar funded lightning payments, sorry it's unclear right now. Try adding cash to your cash app balance first then doing the payment, it should work then or tell you if the bank declined the cash in.

reply

Boom. Ok, here's the issue.

How to replicate:

Create an LN Invoice for an amount that is under $1 (e.g., 1,000 sats), from ANY wallet or service.

In Cash App:

  • Have BTC Balance 0 sats
  • Scan or Paste the the LN invoice

Observed result: "Sorry, your withdrawal could not be processed".

Expected result: Presentation of the Pay $n.nn page, with "Confirm and pay" and "Cancel" buttons

reply

I have dollars (USD balance), no sats (BTC balance). When I try to pay an LN invoice from some wallets, it succeeds.

When I try to pay an LN invoice from other wallets, specifically attempted today again ... Blink.sv, mint.minibits.cash, and coinos.pro, ... it fails.

There's another detail I just realized could be a factor -- I'll send that to your nostr.

Update

Cash App Version 5.53.0 released. No change -- still cannot send to KYC-free wallet apps/services.

Meanwhile, Cash App is spending their time adding support for stablecoins.

Cash App support also said that they, themselves, were unable to pay the LN Invoice (that I provided to them, from Blink wallet) using their Cash App. But then they said "There is not an issue on our side. You will need to work this out with the other platform."

I checked with Blink support, which said "Blink does not block inbound Lightning payments. We accept payments from any Lightning-compatible wallet or service. There are no filters on our end based on who the sender is."

Been like this for 48 hours or more now. I've tried multiple times a day. So weird that it is an issue only these KYC-free wallets and services. I'm doing multiple successful transactions each day, to other LN nodes, without issue.

Did you tried with 10 sat and then analyzing hops, balance and routes? If we have their nodes name we should be able to see how their nodes are connected.
Send me 3 invoices if you want, from Cashapp.

Cash App is the sender. Blink.sv's node is the recipient. Both are custodial services.

Still getting the "Sorry, ... " message from Cash App when trying to pay an LN invoice from Blink.sv, WalletOfSatoshi, mint.MiniBits.cash, (but no error when trying to pay literally a dozen other LN nodes since, that I've tried).

Would there be anyone willing to try and confirm this behavior with Blink.sv and/or WalletOfSatoshi wallet?

I can't be the only person trying to do this ...

Some help here, please.

Just tried paying a Blitz wallet LN invoice. Small amount (< $1). Same thing ... "Sorry, your withdrawal could not be processed."

Is it just me? Or is Cash App actually preventing LN payments to KYC-free wallets?
