I reckon that McDonald’s has an irreplaceable place in the hearts of many Singaporeans.

As a student, I used to mug for my exams, seeking comfort in the quiet and greasy fries. As a young teacher, I battled piles of students’ essays which taunted me like a bottomless pit. Then, fatherhood happened, which absolved me of any reason to spend extended periods of time at McDonald’s.

Until today, that is.

Strategized for the children to have ice cream so that their minds would be receptive to doing work. Tortured myself by getting the boy to write 自己 several times. I was in perpetual alert mode, watching his every move warily. Did he just mess up his strokes again?!

Then, I passed him my phone and helped the 4-year-old with her home project. She was to create a home out of recycled materials. Did some cutting and pasting. Thankfully, the princess was in a cooperative mood, so I didn’t have to plod her along. She coloured some furniture items, which I used to adorn the home.
