There has been no ceasefire in Gaza, and the money and weapons the US sends to Israel is enabling it to continue, Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies and an adviser for the Jewish Voice for Peace Washington, told Al Jazeera.
“And when we hear talk about the need for a region-wide ceasefire in the war with Iran, will that include Palestine?” she asked.
The kind of impunity that Israel has found, and the US has claimed, in the two-and-a-half years of the Gaza genocide is one of the things that gave rise to their will to go after Iran, Bennis said.
“As long as President Trump continues to demand a ceasefire, and for Israel to stop its attacks on Lebanon, but does nothing to change the practice of the US, we’re seeing a repeat of what we’ve seen in Gaza,” she said, adding: “Why would Netanyahu feel it necessary to respond to those requests as long as the weapons continue to flow?”
If Trump is serious about wanting a ceasefire, it has to mean he has to stop sending weapons, she said.
