The data shows how having a spouse brings the life expectancy of married men quite close to that of never-married women - quite significant if one considers how fundamental the longer life span of women has been across ages and cultures. Married and never-married women, on the other hand, have a more similar expected lifespan. However, marriage also benefits women and increases their life expectancy, if only by 1.8 years on average compared to never-married females.

Or is it that healthier men are more likely to marry?

There certainly are advantages to marriage, but it is a gamble and I believe that for my generation at least (Boomers) that gamble became quite a lot riskier, primarily because of feminism, which in most of the west has become the quasi state religion.
