Few artists leave an indelible impression on my mind like the legendary Yayoi Kusama. Her artwork first caught my attention when I visited Naoshima and got up close to her iconic pumpkin sculpture. Hence, when the National Gallery exhibited some of her trendy masterpieces, I leaped at the opportunity to marvel at them. As a fan of spontaneity, I just admired how she thought out of the box and created artworks that were a riot of colours, shapes and materials. I could not discern if there was a method to her seeming randomness, but I vividly recall being engrossed in her mesmerizing universe, grateful to gain some reprieve from the city’s hustle and bustle.
