The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has fallen to its lowest level since the Reagan era.

That fact alone doesn't tell you whether the current administration is right or wrong.

But it does tell you something important:

America is relying on emergency stockpiles to help absorb a major global supply shock.

Think about what that means.

When prices stay relatively stable during a crisis, it's tempting to conclude there isn't really a problem.

But sometimes stability is being purchased by drawing down the buffers that were built for emergencies.

The SPR is one of those buffers.

So the real question isn't whether you support Trump, Biden, Republicans, Democrats, sanctions, or military action.

The question is:

If a strategic reserve exists for emergencies, what does it mean when we have to keep reaching into it?

Price tells you what the market feels today.

Inventory tells you what the system is consuming to make today possible.

The barrel count is what it is.
