I have been going down an Alan Turing rabbit hole today and came across this really well-done video explaining precisely how the Nazi Enigma Machine worked to encrypt messages. It's obviously very sophisticated, but what is most interesting to me is that it is built using simple components and circuits of the sort you learn in grade school science classes, so it's not actually that hard to understand how it works when it's explained really well, as it is in this video.
