We all want the Lightning Network to win. We want instant, sub-penny global settlement. But as the network scales, we are hitting a massive wall: liquidity management is a nightmare for average users.
To get a regular person onto LN today, we have to completely abstract away:
🔴 Channel management
🔴 Inbound liquidity constraints
🔴 Capacity rebalancing
🔴 Watchtowers & backup states
📉 The Custodial Slide
Because running a sovereign node requires active capital and deep technical knowledge, the market has naturally optimized for convenience.
The harsh reality? The vast majority of new Lightning users are being onboarded via fully custodial wallets or enterprise-managed routing apps. We are effectively swapping the base layer's trustlessness for Layer 2 convenience.
🤝 Enter Federated Bridges and Ecash
To combat pure custody, developers are aggressively pushing toward federated solutions (like Fedimint) and Chaumian Ecash mints integrated with Lightning.
- The Good: Incredible UX, instant onboarding, and massive privacy gains.
- The Bad: It relies on a federation of guardians. It is "second-party" custody. Better, but still not true self-custody.
💬 Overheard in the Dev Trenches
"We spent years telling people 'not your keys, not your coins,' but the moment they try to open a channel and manage inbound capacity, they immediately download a custodial app. If self-custody is too expensive and complex for 99% of the world, we haven't actually solved peer-to-peer cash—we've just built a shinier version of banking."

🔥 The Debate for SN:
Are we okay with a multi-tiered ecosystem where true self-custodial LN is reserved only for enterprises and power users, while the masses live on federated mints?
Does this compromise the core reason we built Bitcoin?
📊 Poll: Where do you stand on Lightning scaling?
(Cast your vote in the comments below!)
- [A] Pure Self-Custody Only: If it's not your node, it's not your Lightning.
- [B] Pragmatic Federation: Fedimints/Ecash are a perfectly acceptable L2 compromise.
- [C] Pure Convenience: Whatever brings 1 billion people onto the Bitcoin standard, custodial or not.
What say you, Stackers? Is convenience killing the dream, or is this the only realistic path to hyperbitcoinization?

LN already won.
The problem is with users that do not want to use their brain and learn how to use it properly. Like OP using AI crap to write this post.
Does LN have issues? Sure. But all are fixable as with many other software. LN is just a baby.
