I don't say everyone should be like me, but in the EU country where I live as an expat the laws prevent me from qualifying for state pension and health insurance. So, naturally, I pay the bare minimum taxes that I can get away with.

Wait till Putin invades ~ then you might wish you had paid more in taxes.
The west is dying because more and more citizens want to take from the state but have no sense of duty and gratitude for the huge advantages and privileges that derive from residence in a developed country with rule of law and security.
You think the state owes you a pension and healthcare yet resent contributing to the state by way of taxes.
Its all about you.
Go live in Somalia and see how you like it.

reply

You assume wrong. I am not a EU citizen, and I have my own private pension and a private health insurance. I seek to leave the EU and become a tax resident nowhere. If I had a sense of duty to my motherland I would be now serving in Putin's army. Every state is a gangster that robs people while calling it the price of protection. Plus divides them into "they" and "us" to justify wars. I hate all that, so I am loyal to none.

reply

Putin may be a gangster but it is wrong to say all states are robbing their people.
Most people are sheep and want to be governed and protected.
Yes politicians treat people with the respect they deserve and most people deserve little because most people passively accept whatever government they have or flee to where they perceive things as being easier.
Only the brave few fight for better government.

reply

Hahaha, I'd like to see you fight Putin, or Xi, or Erdogan, or MBS )) But you can start with Trump's dynasty first...

reply

I have fought my government.
Just because most people are cowards you do not have to be.
In Putins case you may be justified in leaving Russia to avoid being used as cannon fodder, but what else have you done? Nothing except thinking of your own safety and comfort and nothing with concern for your fellow Russians?
Most people are selfish cowards and thus easily manipulated by thugs like Putin.

reply

Wrong assumption, again. I left Russia in 1999, before Putin grabbed power. And not for politics, but to study, and it was a great life choice.

Then you abandoned your homeland for the better opportunities available in more developed and better governed nations.
You are thus an ungrateful parasite with no sense of duty or honour.
Without the rule of law and economic and educational infrastructure of the state you would be a homeless helpless vulnerable beggar living from hand to mouth.
Pay your taxes and be grateful the EU allows you to occupy their land and superior economy and civilisation.
