I’ve already read a couple of posts that mention Downzaps as a way of silencing those posts.

They refer to a campaign of censorship or suppression targeting that sort of content.

So... This question pops into my mind: where do those SATS used for Downzaps end up? @k00b

Knowing where they end up might help us understand why someone spends SATS on a Downzap.

Apart from any possible intentions to censor that post.

Worth noting that while they do end up in the rewards pool, you don’t get more rewards for downzapping.

reply

Yeah, there’s no econ incentive for doing downzap! And I think that’s a good thing, plus I’ve even suggested a reward poll just for downzappers in the past! ~lol

reply

I think there’s a decent argument for treating downzaps the same as upzaps for rewards

reply

How are you gonna reward downzappers with sats? Right now, rewards go to the upzappers of the top posts/comments. How are you gonna define a top down post/comment? Only if the downzaps are higher than the upzaps?

reply

Top posts are the top third of posts, so bad posts would just be the bottom third.

reply

With the current number of stackers, and even fewer downzapping, that would be easy to manipulate. You could just go to posts/comments with few or no upzaps and downzap those. With just a few sats, you'd be the top downzapper real quick!

reply

Yes, but you’re ranked against all other zappers, not just downzappers. The expected value of a downzap would still be negative.

I completely agree with my friend; we cannot reward those who behave negatively in the same way as those who behave positively.

reply

That doesn't make sense. Would you mind explaining your point of view in more detail so I can try to understand?

reply

In short, downzapping isn't "behaving negatively". It is an important feature that allows stackers to curate the site organically.

I wrote a couple of longer pieces about this:

Punishment is a Public Good

Incentivizing Downzapping

If there are no reward incentives for those who engage in downzapping, what motivates them to spend those SATS? It’s a very intriguing situation. 🤔

reply

They’re either Good Samaritans or bad actors

reply

I understand that to earn SATS from that reward pool, you have to make zaps as well; it’s good to know that if you make Downzaps, that action doesn’t count towards earning rewards.
