So in Japan, they actually have spots on the street for smoking? You can’t just light up anywhere?

reply

Japan took the opposite approach of most countries - smoking allowed indoors, prohibited outdoors. Restaurants had smoking and non-smoking sections (which someone joked is like having a peeing section in a swimming pool). I don't see many restaurants with smoking anymore, but most bars still allow it.

Outside, they've built a lot of walled smoking areas. Sometimes they're completely enclosed rooms. Someone should make a photo collection of smokers' jails. They look hilarious, all crammed in there.

I'm tempted to say good riddance, I don't smoke, but then I'm sure one of you would start quoting the "First they came for the..." poem at me 😄

Also New York has this rule, I remember a policeman asking me to kill a cigarette because I wasn't in the right spot.

edit: I think you can walk and smoke though, you just can't be stationary

Wow! Welcome

A good friend of mine just returned from vacationing in Japan yesterday. He loved it. Looking forward to learning more about Japan from the territory.

reply

me too! (Tho, they got back like five days ago) — we have the same friends??

reply

Everyone wants to visit Japan apparently.

reply

exchange rate has been favorable I think is part of it

reply

Massively. Japan's on a ~35% sale, maybe more soon.

reply

Maybe, but also, the entire population of the world just got back from visiting Japan 😏

reply

The tourism avalanche that bad?

reply

The change from near zero during covid to record highs a few years later makes it particularly striking, but yeah it's insane.

That said, you can escape them by going just a few streets over, but the main thoroughfares are overrun.

reply

All the cool kids are just getting back from Japan.

reply

Except for the entire population of the world that's currently snapping photos in Shibuya

reply

How is the bitcoin scene in japan? I would love to visit one day

reply

Please do! I'd say there's a decent amount of interest in the technological and speculative aspects, but still not much consideration of it as a serious investment, much less a medium of exchange.

There are small but active Japanese and expat groups.
