The differences are subtle (and probably not even widely agreed upon):

  • Capitalism is the ideology that private property owners are the ones who should make decisions about how resources are used and distibuted
  • Free enterprise is the name of the economic system where people are allowed to run their businesses without state interference
  • Free market is the name of the institution (i.e. the set of rules/incentives) that exists when capitalism or free enterprise are being practiced.
