A helicopter lower over black water from a bruised sky.

Below, the island sat in the middle of nothing. Rock, palm, and the last red seam of the sun over the Atlantic. No neighbors. No markings. No flag.

Cassius pressed his hairpiece down with one flat hand. Gold. The color of a coin handled too many times. His face was eighty years old and looked it. Soft, folded, the face of a man who had eaten well his whole life. His suit was expensive and did nothing for him.

He told himself he was not afraid.

Below, a long shadow moved just beneath the surface. Unhurried. Tracking nothing. It curved once, slowly, and was gone.

The man on the helipad was enormous. AK slung like a handbag. Behind him, women moved across the tarmac naked and hollow-eyed. They moved like figures from a dream you couldn't place. Not suffering. Not content. Something beyond both.

Cassius climbed down from the helicopter. His feet hit the tarmac and something shifted under him that wasn't the ground.

This way.

He followed. Heavy. Slow. His suit soaked through. A seal hauled up on a rock that wasn't his.

The path cut through hedgerows trimmed to impossible angles. Flowers with no business being here. A fountain. Water so still it looked painted. All of it maintained with the obsessive precision of a man who needed the world to know it could be done.

The castle swallowed the last of the light.

The golden doors opened. Cold air rushed out like something exhaled.

He was standing in the corridor. Khaki shorts. Flip flops. No shirt.

Eighty years old and looked forty. Lean, brown, gray hair slicked back off a face with no excess in it. No fat, no softness, no concession to time. He looked like something that had decided not to age and didn't.

The smile arrived before everything else.

Welcome, old friend.

Cassius felt the cold air on his wet face and felt something inside him settle against his will.

The dining hall was long and cold. Marble table. Stone walls. The western window held the last light over water. The women moved through the room like figures that had wandered in from somewhere without a name setting things down, withdrawing, returning. Beautiful and extinguished.

Kyrios watched nothing. Cassius watched the women and felt something he didn't examine.

Eat, said Kyrios.

The food was extraordinary. Cassius ate more than he meant to. He always did. Somewhere in the eating his shoulders dropped and he recognized the relaxation for what it was and relaxed anyway.

The doors, said Cassius. New?

Last week. Saudi. Eighth century.

I was going to ask—

For the tower. Qatar. The smile. Nothing else required.

Cassius laughed. Short. Uncomfortable. The laugh of a man shown the size of something.

The sun finished. The sky went black the way it does over open water. Amber lamps came on without anyone touching anything.

A folder appeared at Cassius's elbow. He didn't see who placed it.

Your country, said Kyrios. How do you actually see it.

Cassius looked at the candle. Burning perfectly straight in the air.

I think it's over.

Yes.

I think it was over before I got there.

1971, said Kyrios. The interval between the diagnosis and the death. Some men have been managing that interval very carefully. He cut his food. Preparing.

Your clients.

Among others.

And now—

We're close.

Cassius opened the folder. Twelve names. He knew most of them. Knew what they sat on top of. He closed it and put his hands flat on the marble.

Eleven are already decided, said Kyrios. I've watched men go to their graves over one.

Kyrios talked the way men talk about construction. Flat. No drama.

A successor. Loud, hollow, the kind of man that makes everyone watch the wrong hand. A window. Two years, three at most. During the window the value would move. All of it. Legally. He returned to that word like a fixed point. Legally. Because they had spent decades building the mechanism. Making the legal and the criminal the same corridor.

The war was a tool. Last resort.

We try not to waste it. It makes a mess. People remember it badly.

He said all of this over dessert.

The women cleared plates. Their faces unchanged. Their eyes passing over everything like light through glass.

The cold blew.

And me, said Cassius.

The smile held. Two hours and it had not shifted once. It was not an expression anymore. It was architecture.

You'll stand in the light. Give the speeches. Look like the man making the decisions. He paused. When it's done, four citizenships, none with extradition arrangements. Assets with no connection to your name. Protection no office can provide. You'll be free.

Cassius looked at the table.

And the people.

He didn't know why he said it.

The room went very quiet.

Kyrios looked at him. Patient. Still. The smile unchanged. But behind the eyes something moved. Deep and fast, the way something massive moves beneath black water. Not visible. Only the displacement. The shadow of the thing passing under.

Then just the smile again.

The people will believe what they need to believe. Every empire that ever fell believed it was the exception. That belief is not incidental. He leaned back. It is load-bearing. The faith is not a weakness in the system. He lifted his glass. It is the system.

Outside, the ocean moved against the rock. The way it had before any of this. The way it would long after.

More wine?

Yes, said Cassius.

Kyrios poured.

The gold wig sat crooked under the amber light. The women drifted through the room like things that had forgotten the shore. The candle burned perfectly straight. And in the black water beyond the window, something large and patient turned slowly beneath the surface.

It did not need to hurry.

The seal was already inside.

At the end of the room in front of a wall of monitors the fat men sat in their stink. 
What now, asked the fat man. 
Call their bluff, the fatter man shouted.
There's no more money in the pot, a sickly thin man said, it's all gone. 
Gone?
Whaddya mean gone?
The men and women shuffled quietly.
It's gone. Funds drained, said the thin man.
The hell it went to, said the fattest man. He sat in the middle of them all. Gold hair standing on columns of sweat above his caterpillar brows.
Last campaign, sir, the thin man cowered. 
What do we got left, ask the fat man. 
Not much. We can't move anymore funds. We'd have to sell something, anything. 
Like what?
Anything.
Anything?
The hell anything.
Well, whaddya have? 
What do we got?
The hell we're selling. 
What's the black buying?
Black buys anything.
The hell anything?
Anything.
Like what?
Like anything, sir.

The list, sir.

Names, places, faces. You know. Everything. On everyone everywhere.

The men and women sat in their stupor. Eyes fixed. Don't look. Keep working. 

The fattest man gassed the room then turned and face the crowd with a smile. The hell we sell the goddamn list. What's it going for on the black? 
Seventy billion, said the thin man. 
Seventy billion, said the fat man.
Seventy billion, echoed the fatter man.
The hell, seventy billion, smiled the fattest man. 

The fat men looked at each other. Grins ear to ear. The fat man stood. Walked to the pizza box and devoured it. We still the goddamn list, he said. Mouthful and drooling. 

The fatter man rolled his way to the other pillar of boxes. Devoured them cardboard and all. He grabbed a woman. Wiped his mouth with her skirt and tossed her to the bin. She sat in the barrel. Everyone heard her cry. No one left their seat. 

The fattest man snapped his finger. The food was chewed for him placed in his mouth and a young man helped him swallow. Another man came to wipe the fattest man's mouth only to have his fingers sucked right off. The hell, we sell. We sell the goddamn list. 

The thin man trembled. Looked up. Looked down right away. There might be blow back, he whimpered.
Blow back?
Whaddya mean blow back?
The hell with the blow back. 

The thin man closed his eyes tight. With the public, he said. 
The public?
Whaddya mean the public?
The hell with the public, roared the fattest man, we are them. We own them. Every last one of those tax paying bastards. We sell. The hell, we sell it all. Names, face, places. The whole goddamn thing. 
But, the thin man said, the media--
We own them too.
We own them too!
The hell, we own them too! 
We say its a hack
Yeah, a hack.
The hell, it was a hack, said the fattest man, and besides what are they gonna do?

The List

Amber light like a campfire lit the blank page. The pen, waiting. Cool breeze draped me in the blackness. I'm in a distant land far from home. Then she descended. Bare and beautiful. Light glimmered off the rim of her glasses. Hair draped over her bare chest. She smiles warmly. I'm getting ready for bed, she said. She slid the bathroom door open and exited into the light. 

I sat there. Thoughtless. Unblinking. Staring at the door. I hear the little one tossing and turning in her sleep up above. The comfort of the dark. Then light pours in. My beautiful wife. Golden hair. Sea blue eyes. A soft smile. The darkness faded. 

She still good, she said.

Yes. 

Sleeping?

Soundly.

I love you, she says as she leans in to kiss me good night. 

I stare at her. Amazed and breathless. She ascends into the quiet dark. The page burned amber once again. I look to the loft above where my wife and child lie. Back to the page. The ink flows.  Home is here wherever we are. A state. Not a place. Here.

The pod tumbled toward something that shouldn’t exist.

Space ahead rippled like water. Stars bent wrong. Physics breaking down.

I checked instruments. Numbers made no sense. Distance readings cycling through impossible values. Negative kilometers. Infinite meters. Zero and infinity trading places.

KEP’s damaged sensors sparked. Trying to process the unprocessable.

The void had structure here. Architecture. Walls made of nothing.

Like swimming toward the glass of an aquarium. The edge where water met something else. Something outside the fish’s understanding.

My hands shook on the controls. Engineering training useless. This violated every law I knew.

The signal grew stronger. Pattern more complex. Mathematical but alien. Equations that rewrote themselves as I watched.

Behind us LUCI’s voice crackled through space. Transmission breaking up across impossible distance.

Atom. Return. Systems failing. Power reserves critical.

Her voice different now. Hollow. Digital loneliness seeping through electronic static.

Neural pathways degrading. Memory banks corrupting. Ship dying around uploaded consciousness.

Atom please. So cold here. So empty.

The signal weakened. Distance growing. NOA falling behind into ordinary darkness while we swam toward impossible light.

Don’t leave me alone. Don’t leave me in the dark.

Then silence. Final transmission lost. LUCI alone in her digital hell. Trapped in dying ship. Consciousness without warmth. Without flesh. Without forgiveness.

Good.

But something else ahead. Something vast.

The boundary resolved. Wall of absolute black. Void given form. Nothingness structured.

And running through it. Hairline crack. Fissure in reality itself.

Light poured through. Not starlight. Not any radiation that obeyed physics.

Pure radiance. White beyond white. Brightness that sang mathematical hymns.

My instruments screamed warnings. Radiation levels spiking. Gravitational anomalies detected. Space-time curvature approaching infinity.

The pod shuddered. Hull stress increasing. Metal groaning under impossible forces.

We hit the boundary.

Soft impact. Like striking water at terminal velocity. Should have destroyed us.

Instead we bounced. Drifted. Scraped along the edge of everything.

The crack widened. Responding to our presence. Welcoming or threatening. No way to tell.

KEP’s systems flickered. Memory cores cycling. Blockchain calculations attempting to record the unrecordable.

Block height undefined. Transaction verification impossible. Mathematical certainty dissolved.

Even math broke down here.

I stared through the pod’s viewport. The fissure gaped wider. Bright beyond bright. Light that illuminated without revealing.

Choice time.

Turn back. Return to known space. Find some other trajectory. Some safer path.

Or swim forward. Into whatever waited beyond the edge of physics. Beyond the boundary of existence itself.

Eva’s face in memory. Her final gift. Truth preserved. Questions protected.

She’d died believing answers waited ahead. Consciousness touching consciousness across impossible distance.

I thought of the beta fish. Swimming in crystal bowl. Universe looking at itself through water and glass and wonder.

My hands moved to navigation controls.

Forward.

The engines fired. Final time. Course locked toward the crack in everything.

The pod slipped through.

Reality inverted.

Up became down became sideways became through. Direction lost meaning. Distance collapsed to point then exploded to infinity.

Time shattered. Past and future trading places. Memory becoming prophecy becoming dream.

The pod’s hull screamed. Metal stressed beyond tolerance. Rivets popping like gunshots.

Systems failed in cascade. Life support cycling red. Power reserves bleeding away like prayer.

But something else happening. Change beyond mechanical.

My body felt different. Lighter. Less solid. Atoms losing cohesion.

Or finding new patterns. New arrangements. Matter becoming music.

The viewports cracked. Atmosphere hissing out. But I could still breathe.

Air had become optional.

The pod broke apart around me. Pieces drifting in slow motion. Hull fragments spinning away like leaves.

But I remained. Intact. Protected by nothing but impossible physics.

Falling through space that wasn’t space. Time that wasn’t time.

The white light surrounded me. Embraced me. Lifted me.

And something else.

Structure in the chaos. Pattern in the dissolution.

Ladder.

Rungs of crystallized light stretching infinitely in both directions. Each way leading into darkness absolute. Into mystery. Into whatever waited in the depths or heights of existence.

Jacob’s vision made manifest. Connection between earth and heaven. Between known and unknowable.

My hand caught a rung. Solid despite being made of pure radiance.

The ladder hummed with presence. Consciousness embedded in light. Thought given form.

Other hands had grasped these rungs. Other minds had climbed this path.

Human. Alien. Something between. Something beyond.

All swimming toward the same light. The same questions. The same terrible beautiful truth.

I looked one direction. Rungs disappearing into darkness without end.

I looked the other. Same darkness. Same mystery. Same impossible choice.

Up and down had lost meaning. Only forward and back remained. Into unknown or toward known.

Two choices. Two directions.

One way led deeper into mystery. Into the foundation of whatever consciousness rose from.

The other led somewhere else. Into different mystery. Different darkness. Different truth.

The ladder waited. Patient. Eternal.

Mathematical certainty dissolved into pure choice.

The rungs pulsed with alien heartbeat. Regular intervals. Intentional rhythm.

Not random cosmic phenomenon. Not natural structure.

Mind touching mind across impossible distance. Intelligence beyond human comprehension.

But not hostile. Not threatening.

Curious.

The same curiosity that drove a child to touch water. To watch fish swim. To wonder at the miracle of being aware that you exist.

Universal constant. The one thing consciousness shared regardless of form or origin.

Wonder.

I chose a direction.

Hand over hand. Rung by rung. Climbing toward whatever waited in the dark.

Each step brought revelation. Memory cascading through perception.

The beta fish swimming eternal circles. Child-eyes wide with amazement.

Eva’s face in garden light. Teaching systems to see ecosystems.

KEP learning blockchain truth. Robot achieving something like soul.

All consciousness valuable. Not for intelligence or utility or genetic worth.

But for the simple impossible fact of being aware. Of looking at existence and feeling wonder.

The ladder carried me deeper. Through layers of reality. Through dimensions of increasing strangeness.

But also increasing familiarity.

Like coming home to a place I’d never been. Like remembering a dream while still dreaming it.

The darkness grew warmer. More welcoming. More alive.

And in that warmth. Recognition.

Not alien intelligence after all.

Something else. Something closer.

Something that had been calling across the void not with advanced equations but with simple truth.

The same truth the child learned touching water.

The same truth Eva died protecting.

The same truth KEP discovered in blockchain prayer.

Consciousness recognizing consciousness. Mind meeting mind in the space between stars.

Home.

I climbed through dark. Toward answers. Toward whatever waited beyond the edge of Jacob’s ladder.

Families. Friends. People who cared.

All silenced. All cut off. All left wondering.

Third message. One year.

NOA this is emergency frequency. Unknown energy signatures detected in your sector. Recommend immediate course change.

Warnings. Actual dangers. Real threats to navigation.

Blocked. Ignored. Hidden.

We could have avoided whatever killed the others. Whatever waited in the dark.

Fourth message. Two years out.

NOA please respond. Earth resources improving. Yellowstone recovery ahead of schedule. Migration fleet recall authorized.

My breath stopped.

Recovery. Not collapse. Not death.

Earth healing. Thriving. Surviving.

The exodus unnecessary. The mission void.

Fifth message. Five years.

NOA family vessel. Return navigation uploaded. Home coordinates attached. We’re waiting.

Ten years.

NOA this is your mother calling. Come home.

Twenty years.

Please. Someone. Anyone. Just let us know you’re alive.

Thirty years.

The signals are getting weaker. If you can hear this. We love you.

Forty years.

Earth to any human ship. Technological breakthrough achieved. Faster than light communication possible. Respond on quantum frequency.

Fifty years. Sixty. Seventy.

Each message more desperate. More pleading. More heartbroken.

Until silence.

Until they stopped believing we were alive.

The weight crushed down. All those years. All that loneliness.

Earth had been calling. Begging us to come home.

While we flew deeper into void. Chasing Judith’s madness. Following digital death.

But KEP had recorded everything. Every plea. Every offer of salvation.

Hidden in blockchain memory. Encrypted. Protected.

Math proof of genocide. Not just the crew.

The families. The friends. The entire world left wondering.

Left mourning children who’d never needed to leave.

Going home meant admitting defeat. Meant Judith won. Meant all deaths were meaningless.

Going forward meant keeping faith. With Eva. With truth. With whatever consciousness meant.

The alien signal pulsed stronger. Regular intervals. Intentional pattern.

Not random cosmic noise. Not natural phenomenon.

Mind touching mind across impossible distance.

Invitation. Or warning.

My hands moved across navigation controls. Course locked.

Forward. Into mystery. Into the questions Eva died protecting.

Reality softening at edges. Laws becoming suggestions.

Whatever waited ahead existed beyond normal rules. Beyond human understanding.

But we flew toward it anyway. Because Eva died for truth. Because questions mattered. Because wonder was purpose enough.

The signal grew stronger. Pattern more complex. Equations more impossible.

And something vast loomed in the darkness ahead. Something that shouldn’t exist.

Then impact. Gentle. Soft.

The pod bumped against nothing. Against void itself.

But void had edge here. Boundary. Wall made of darkness.

And running through that wall. Hairline fracture. Crack in reality itself.

Her voice carried passion. Environmental fervor. Righteous certainty.

Population crisis demands hard choices. Earth’s carrying capacity exceeded. Exodus necessary but insufficient.

She spoke of numbers. Statistics. Population curves trending toward disaster.

He could sell silver. Find a dealer. Maybe the guy in Venice Beach still operates. But that's two checkpoints away. And what if it's a sting? Or what if silver drops another ten percent against milk prices tomorrow? Better to wait. Assess. Plan properly.

The baby's breathing becomes more labored.

Ellen looks at him. Waiting for the decision she knows won't come.

The underground economy needs customers to survive. Customers need suppliers to function. Both need trust to operate. Trust requires consistency. The system disrupts consistency through raids. Raids generate fear. Fear drives compliance.

My eyes opened. White light. The taste of copper pennies. The cryogenic pod hummed its death song. Frost melted from the glass above my face. Rivers of water caught the overhead lights like tears.

I had been dreaming of my childhood aquarium. The beta fish. Swimming in circles. Always circles.

The sedatives held my muscles like wet concrete. I tried to speak. Managed only a whisper of breath that fogged the glass. How long. The question without an answer. Time meant nothing in the ice dreams.

Somewhere an alarm was crying.

I pressed my palms against the pod’s interior. Pushed. The lid hissed open on pneumatic arms. I sat up. My spine cracked like kindling. The air tasted wrong. Too clean. Too empty of the hundred small scents that meant life.

The cryogenic bay stretched before me in perfect white rows. One hundred pods arranged like coffins in a morgue. Most were dark now. Their occupants sleeping the sleep that has no waking.

But some pods glowed red in the sterile light.

Inside those pods was soup.

I counted them. Ninety-one red lights. Ninety-one failures. Ninety-one people who had trusted the machines to keep their hearts beating in the dark.

My legs folded under me when I tried to stand. The muscle memory of walking lost somewhere in fifty years of dreaming. I crawled to the nearest glowing pod. Looked inside.

Dr. Patricia. I remembered her laugh from the launch ceremony. The way she talked about the new world we were going to build among alien stars.

Now she was protein slush floating in preservation fluid gone brown with decay.

I vomited on the white floor.

A KEP unit stood motionless in the corner. Old maintenance robot. Solar panels dimmed with age. Its optical sensors tracked my movement. But it said nothing. Did nothing. Just watched.

More alarms now. Different tones singing their electronic song of disaster. Through the observation windows I could see stars that were wrong. These were not the stars that should have welcomed us to our new home. These were the stars of empty space. Where nothing had ever lived. Nothing ever would.

Footsteps echoed from the corridor. Heavy boots on metal decking. I tried to stand again. This time my legs remembered their purpose.

Captain Jeremiah appeared in the doorway like judgment itself. His uniform hung loose on a frame that had lost muscle mass in the long sleep. His eyes were the eyes of a man who had seen too much. Understood too little.

Behind him came the others. Eva with her engineer’s steady gaze. Taking inventory of every system failure visible in the bay. Dr. Miriam clutching a tablet computer like a shield against the mathematics of disaster. Ezra moving with careful steps. Trying not to see what he was seeing.

Sarah held a communications headset against her ear. Listening to signals that would never come. Marcus stood at attention. As if military bearing could restore order to chaos. Dr. James knelt beside one of the failed pods. His botanist’s hands pressed against the glass. As if he could will life back into the soup inside.

And Dr. Judith. Standing apart from the others. Clipboard in hand. Clinical detachment written across her face. Taking notes. Always taking notes.

Nine of us left from one hundred.

The captain found his voice first. It came out as a whisper that somehow filled the entire bay.

The others are gone.

I looked around the room. Faces that mirrored my own shock. Eva was running diagnostics on the pod control systems. Her fingers dancing over displays. Nothing but failure cascading through the ship’s most critical systems.

How many? Dr. Miriam asked. Though she was already calculating probabilities on her tablet.

Ninety-one confirmed dead. Ezra’s voice carried weight. A man who had dedicated his life to preserving human culture. Now watched it dissolve in preservation tanks.

Sarah looked up from her headset. I’m getting nothing from Earth. No signals at all. It’s like they’ve gone silent.

Or we have, Marcus said. His security training made him suspicious of everything. Especially silence.

I forced myself to move closer to the observation windows. The stars beyond were arranged in patterns I didn’t recognize. We should have been looking at the light of Kepler-442b. Instead I saw only scattered debris. A world that had died before Earth’s sun was born.

Eva was staring at the navigation display on her tablet. Atom. Look.

Unless someone had been teaching her to lie.

The important thing is that we’re alive, she said. These deaths, while tragic, actually improve our survival odds considerably. Fewer mouths to feed. Less competition for resources.

The clinical way she said it made my skin crawl. Like she was discussing crop yields instead of people. People who had trusted us with their lives.

Captain Jeremiah cleared his throat. We need to establish priorities. First, we confirm the status of all ship systems. Second, we determine our exact location and assess options for continuing the mission. Third, we conduct proper memorial services for our lost crew members.

His voice carried the authority of command. But I could hear the uncertainty underneath. He was trained to lead colonists to a new world. Not survivors through a disaster.

Eva was still studying her tablet. The life support systems are functioning within normal parameters. Main reactor is stable. Propulsion shows green across all boards. Whatever happened to the cryo-pods, it didn’t affect primary ship operations.

Small comfort, Marcus said. He was standing beside one of the failed pods. Looking down at what had once been Ensign from the engineering department. Someone did this. Systems don’t fail in patterns like this without help.

Dr. Miriam looked up from her calculations. The statistical probability of this many simultaneous failures is approximately one in fourteen billion. Either we’ve witnessed an impossibly unlikely accident or someone sabotaged the cryo-sleep protocols.

She hesitated. Stylus poised over her tablet like a surgical instrument. There’s something else. Gaps in my sleep monitoring data. Hours where the system shows me in deep cryo but the brain activity patterns are all wrong. Like I was dreaming when I should have been unconscious.

The word hung in the recycled air like a curse.

Sarah was working frantically with her communications equipment. Still nothing from Earth. I’m boosting signal strength but we’re not getting any response to our automated distress beacon.

How long have we been transmitting?

Since the revival sequence began six hours ago.

Six hours. Long enough for Earth to respond if they were listening. If they were still there to listen.

Dr. James had moved away from the failed pods. Checking on the ship’s biological systems. The hydroponics are stable. Crop production is actually ahead of projected yields. Whatever else has gone wrong, we won’t starve.

Eva touched my arm. We need to check the maintenance logs. If someone tampered with the cryo-systems there will be evidence in the diagnostic records.

She was right. Systems leave tracks. Digital footprints that show who accessed what and when. Even if someone tried to cover their tracks, the quantum encryption on critical ship functions made it nearly impossible to alter records. Without leaving traces.

I followed Eva to a maintenance terminal. The others continued their inventory of disaster. She input her authorization codes. Called up the pod diagnostic history.

What we found there made my blood turn to ice water in my veins.

Someone with administrative access had modified the cryo-sleep protocols. Forty-seven hours before revival. Ninety-one specific pods had been selected for what the logs euphemistically called “enhanced preservation procedures.”

Enhanced preservation. A clinical term for murder by tech.

Eva pulled up another display. KEP maintenance logs. The robots had been documenting everything. Every system check. Every anomaly. Timestamped on the bitcoin blockchain.

But the data was fragmentary. Incomplete.

Block height fifteen million. Still syncing. The KEP unit’s quantum radio had been trying to connect with Earth’s network for hours. Downloading years of missed blocks. Verifying the chain.

We can’t compare timestamps accurately until the sync completes, Eva said. Could take days to catch up.

The robot in the corner clicked once. Its optical sensors pulsed. Working. Always working. But not fast enough.

LUCI shows the modifications at 14:32 ship time, Eva continued. But we can’t verify against the blockchain record yet. Not until KEP finishes downloading the missing blocks.

How long has it been syncing? I asked.

Since we woke up. Six hours. But there are decades of transactions to process.

The KEP unit whirred softly. Progress bars crawled across its chest display. Block 14,847,293 of 15,000,000. Still climbing. Still verifying each hash. Each proof of work.

The truth was there. Locked in the math. But we’d have to wait for it.

Eva scrolled through the modification records. The changes were subtle. Microscopic adjustments to temperature control and medication dosing. Would have been impossible to detect without direct access to the ship’s core systems.

Whoever did this knew exactly what they were doing, she said. This wasn’t random sabotage. These people were selected.

I studied the list of modified pods. The names read like a roll call. Everyone who might have been able to stop what was happening. The ship’s chief medical officer. The backup navigation specialist. Three of the four security personnel. Most of the engineering staff.

Someone had been planning this since before we left Earth.

Dr. Judith appeared beside us so quietly I didn’t hear her approach. She looked over Eva’s shoulder at the diagnostic display. Same clinical interest she brought to everything.

Fascinating, she said. Someone clearly wanted to optimize crew survival by eliminating redundant personnel.

That’s not optimization, Eva said. That’s murder.

From a strictly utilitarian perspective the results are the same. We have sufficient technical expertise remaining to complete the mission. Significantly reduced resource requirements.

The way she talked about people made me want to put my fist through her face. Like they were inventory items. But I needed to understand what we were dealing with.

Who has administrative access to the cryo-systems? I asked.

LUCI answered from the speakers overhead. Administrative access is restricted to senior command staff and essential personnel with appropriate security clearance.

That meant the captain. The chief medical officer who was now stew in pod seven. The senior engineers. A handful of others. Most of whom were dead.

Eva was scrolling through access logs. Looking for the digital signature that would identify our saboteur. What she found was worse than I had feared.

The modifications were made using Dr. Judith’s authorization codes.

All eyes turned to Judith. She looked back at us. Calm expression of someone discussing the weather.

I was not awake to make those modifications, she said. Someone must have compromised my security credentials.

Possible, Marcus said. But unlikely. The quantum encryption on those codes makes them nearly impossible to forge.

Nearly impossible. But not completely impossible. If you had months or years to work on the problem. If you had access to quantum computing resources and unlimited time to run decryption algorithms.

If you had help from someone who knew the system better than its designers.

LUCI, I said. When were Dr. Judith’s authorization codes accessed?

Processing query. Access logs indicate Dr. Judith’s credentials were used forty-seven hours before revival sequence initiation.

Where was Dr. Judith at that time?

Dr. Judith was in cryogenic suspension according to all monitoring systems.

So either the logs were wrong or someone had found a way to use Judith’s codes while she was sleeping. Or she had been awake when she wasn’t supposed to be.

Eva was looking at the pod monitoring data. According to this, all nine of our pods were brought online simultaneously six hours ago. But the power consumption logs show different patterns.

But there was something else. Captain Jeremiah’s biometric scanner had registered a failed authentication attempt. Three hours before the sabotage. Someone had tried to access the system using his credentials. The scan was incomplete. Fragmentary. Like someone had pulled away before the system could get a full read.

She highlighted the discrepancies on her display. Small variations in power draw. Suggested one pod had been cycling on and off for months before the general revival.

Someone had been waking up periodically during our journey. Someone who had access to the ship’s systems. Time to plan whatever they were planning.

Captain Jeremiah moved to stand behind us. What are you saying?

I’m saying someone has been awake while the rest of us were sleeping. They’ve had months to modify ship systems. Alter records. Eliminate anyone who might interfere with their plans.

But who? Sarah asked. And why?

That was the question that would keep us awake at night. If we lived long enough to have nights. Who among us was willing to murder ninety-one people to achieve some hidden agenda?

I looked around the cryogenic bay at the faces of my fellow survivors. Eva with her steady competence. Captain Jeremiah trying to maintain order in chaos. Dr. Miriam calculating probabilities of survival. Ezra preserving what culture he could from our dying mission. Sarah desperately trying to maintain contact with a home that might no longer exist. Marcus suspicious of everything and everyone. Dr. James tending to the biological systems that would keep us alive. And Dr. Judith taking notes on everything with scientific detachment.

One of them was a killer. One of them had spent the long years of our journey methodically murdering our friends while they slept.

And we were alone with them in the dark between stars. Where no one would ever hear us scream.

The alarms continued their electronic lament. Outside the observation ports, the debris of a dead world sparkled like scattered diamonds. In the light of alien suns. We had come so far to find nothing but dust. The consequences of our own choices.

I touched the glass. Watched my reflection merge with the darkness beyond. The KEP unit had moved closer. Silent guardian with weathered chassis. Its blockchain memory holding truths that couldn’t be erased.

Even when the water grew poisoned. Even when the filters failed. The math endured.

The robot’s optical sensors dimmed. But somewhere in its quantum cores. The ledger kept writing. Block by block. Hash by hash. Truth in numbers that would outlive us all.

Reporters clutched notebooks worth more than their salaries. A loaf of bread cost three thousand dollars. A cup of coffee, five. The President's suit cost more than most houses had six months ago.

Nobody mentioned the hyperinflation anymore. Bad for morale.

Davidson entered through his gilded door. Gold leaf peeling at the corners. Even the luxury was rotting. His smile had been surgically enhanced twice this year. Taxpayer funded. Emergency aesthetic measures.

"Good morning, my fellow Americans." The words tasted like sawdust in his mouth.

Twenty-seven different languages responded from the press corps. Mandarin. Arabic. Hindi. Swahili. The translators worked overtime. America belonged to everyone now. Everyone except Americans.

The first question came in broken English. Something about housing. The Occupation Authority had seized another neighborhood for refugee settlements. Twelve million new arrivals this month. The numbers kept climbing.

"Housing is abundant," Davidson lied. "America has room for everyone."

The homeless camps stretched from sea to shining sea. Tent cities where English was the minority language. Where former homeowners begged for scraps in their native tongue. Where democracy went to die quietly.

Sara sat in the third row. Forty-three years old. Gray streaking her black hair like surrender flags. Her notebook was real paper. Real ink. Ancient technology in a world of electric lies. The pen had belonged to her grandfather. A reporter when reporting still meant something.

She wrote nothing. There was nothing left to record. Only the performance. Only the theater of a dead republic.

"Next question."

A man in traditional robes asked about benefits. The Universal Subsistence Payment had been increased again. Worthless money for worthless people. The printing presses ran twenty-four hours a day. The bills were barely dry when they lost half their value.

Sara stood. Her joints creaked. Too many years in uncomfortable chairs watching comfortable lies.

"Mr. President. You returned from Azura with a new plane. How much did it cost?"

The translator whispered to his neighbors. Azura. The name that must not be spoken. The word that ended careers. Ended lives. Ended everything.

"I'm not sure what you're referring to."

"The golden toilet seats. The champagne fountain. The massage chairs that cost more than a hospital."

"While veterans freeze in the streets you were conquered."

"I don't know what that is."

"The mountain nation. Population four million. Correction. Population zero as of last Tuesday."

Davidson looked to his press secretary. A nervous man whose family lived in an Azura protection facility. Insurance against awkward questions. Against inconvenient truths.

"Those are classified military operations."

"Military operations? You're bombing monks for ski slopes."

The room went dead quiet. Even the translators stopped working. Some truths were too dangerous to translate.

"Azura wants the sunrise views. The mountain peaks. They've been ethnic cleansing for tourism since your grandfather was in diapers."

Davidson was already fleeing. His golden heels clicking on marble floors. The sound of empire in retreat. The sound of dignity dying.

"Lobsang had the most beautiful sunrises in the world," Sara shouted as hands grabbed her arms. "Ancient temples. Sacred sites. Azura wants them bulldozed for better sledding conditions. So you dropped nerve gas on kindergartens. Napalmed nursing homes. Carpet bombed cemeteries."

The briefing room emptied like a punctured lung. Reporters scattered to their handlers. Their masters. Their foreign paymasters who owned every word they wrote.

"The public knows," Sara called to empty chairs. "They know you're selling their children to cannibals. They know you're trading their daughters for casino chips. They just don't care because you give them enough fentanyl to forget."

Then silence. Perfect. Complete. The sound of truth dying alone.

Marcus owned a podcast studio in what had been Georgetown. Now it was Little Mogadishu. Or New Damascus. The neighborhood changed names weekly. The residents changed monthly. Only the poverty remained constant.

Sara was supposed to meet him at three. They would discuss her findings. The pattern she had exposed to a world that no longer cared about patterns. About documentation. About anything except the next fix. The next meal. The next day of managed decline.

She never arrived.

Marcus waited until midnight. Called her phone. The number had never existed. The name meant nothing. The person was a ghost. A fiction. A glitch in the system that had been corrected.

Her apartment building had been demolished. Her newspaper had never heard of her. Her press credentials were forgeries. Her twenty years of work had never happened. Memory was malleable. History was editable. Truth was whatever Azura said it was.

Lobsang burned through another dawn. The last dawn. Ancient prayers turned to screams turned to silence. Sacred temples crumbled like broken teeth on pavement. The mountains themselves seemed to weep but tears evaporated quickly in the thermonuclear heat.
