*Castle in the Sky* was the first film to be animated by Studio Ghibli. Its production team included many of Miyazaki's longtime collaborators, who would continue to work with the studio for the following three decades. The film was partly inspired by Miyazaki's trips to Wales, where he witnessed the aftermath of the [1984–1985 coal miners' strike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984%E2%80%931985_United_Kingdom_miners%27_strike "1984–1985 United Kingdom miners' strike"). The island of Laputa is used to highlight the theme of environmentalism, exploring the relationships between humanity, nature, and technology, a reflection of Miyazaki's ecological philosophy. After the previous captain (Durk) of the SS Audacious had killed himself with a phaser, I, as fourth ranking officer took charge (seriously, the other dudes weren't up for it) and save our lil' warp ship from a nasty predicament somewhere on the outskirts of the Milky.

Data-analysis indicated Captain Durk had shot himself after inhaling toxic dumbening fumes on the surface of LaGrange VII, so I decided to get the crew out of here and get some R\&R in a nearby system that would help recuperate their neuroplactic functionalities.

***P.S.:** Meanwhile, I've implemented some new rules on the ship. The men's fashion was horrendous as f\* and so I abolished all men's wear. Since there's plenty of choice in the women's section, I'm quite positive the masculine side of our crew will find proper attire and update themselves to the 24th centure. For f's sake.*

What story do you imagine for this plane?

Been drawing now actively for two years. Where I used to just draw lines to match the reference, now I begin to see objects in space within a specific camera. angle. This new perspective is informing the lines, it's guiding where it needs to go. Instead of previously looking at the picture, how does it look? Now it's like how does the shape appear logical/natural in space.

E.g. it's the difference between learning how to spell vs. writing a story.

Makes you revisit the educational system again. Wasn't the whole goal of those lessons to draw and write what we wanted to make, instead of needing to have the right spelling. The goals are completely misplaced. You're being judged for the practice but never get to make art.

The more I think about it, the more it hurts my brain. How silly the whole school endeavour was. I already knew that, but the level of idiocy is more profound than I imagined. And let's not even start on coloring pages.

Anywow. I'm now free to imagine where this plane is and where it's gonna fly off to.

It took me a while to get to the A4 size sketchbook. I started out on A6 actually, can you believe it? I just felt I had to make it easy for myself, and reduce complexity as much as possible. A black fineliner and a small page. Just get the basics down first, right? Shape. Ratios. Line quality.

Small doodles I still do, but then spread out over A4. This was one case where I did the roof on top and felt completely done with it. I couldn't force myself into finishing that building as I was only interesting in the shades on the tiles.

Then underneath I did a completely different drawing of a plane. And I created some clouds which took over the page. Now it's kinda cool. Like the plane is flying through a dream or something.

I'm gonna do this more often. Connect these ideas in a single image. It must mean something. Or at least look interesting.

Death Star spotted over the Netherlands

I've been drawing roofs and Star Wars stuff for a while and I just like the mix of it. I spend so much time dreaming, flying in the sky, but I still have to live in the old grimy town. It doesn't make sense. I want to express that the daily life has an augmented part to it. To expand this boring town, make it interesting again. 

The Japanse in the box says Star of Death. The other characters are nonsense.
