Stacker News has basically become my new digital home on the internet. This is the first place I visit in the morning and I'm thankful for everyone who contributes to this place.
But when it comes to the "big wide internet" - something is up. It does not feel so big anymore, in fact, it feels pretty damn narrow. Maybe I've become an old man and these are the moans of a millennial longing for the olden days, but I have this overwhelming feeling that somehow over the last few years the internet has started to really suck hard.
The Shit ListThe Shit List
It's lame how all the social media walled-gardens have become so shit. For me at least there used to be some cool people and communities on Twitter, Instagram, and Reddit - but they have long since succumbed to enshitification.
- X/Twitter: has become a completely unusable algo and bot rage machine.
That's the old passage to Ravenholm. We don't go there anymore.I need to delete my account at some point, but don't want anyone to squat my username. - Reddit: Some of the ex-pat communities and fringe / political subs were always interesting sources of perspectives and juicy intel, but a lot of it now is basically AI bots talking with each other.
- Instagram: As a visual artist this still plays somewhat of a role in connecting with other creatives and just messaging people etc, but it's nothing like it was 10 years ago.
- Substack: is a more recent player, and this is one I hoped would possibly be able to do something different, given its focus on writing. I am a writer, but my "feed" there has for some reason become random click-bait shit and people shilling how to be "authentic and true to yourself" and "how to get more followers". I have come across some interesting people there, but the signal to noise ratio is still far too low. It seems to be going the way of medium with it's own kind of performance culture that is not quite my style (picture this: cupcakes and picnics on the riverside instead of anarchy in the streets)...
Nostalgia 2000Nostalgia 2000
- One of my big old inspirations is old skool forum culture. Everything2.com was the kind place where esoteric ideas and all kinds of "different" people came together. You would never know what you were going to get. I still find myself going there after all these years.
- Superfuture was another inspiration: streetware, tech, travel.
- Of course there is BitcoinTalk, which I was not really a part of in the heyday, but which is the source for a lot of the canonical truth on Bitcoin.
- I never got into 4Chan, but I hear that had a vibe.
If I blend all these together in my nostalgic mind, I imagine a kind of mythical text-based place where you could dive into some deep theology, or getting advice on running a Bitcoin node or hacking a DD-WRT router, or otherwise talking about Shibuya fashion or travel to some random place.
Overall, there was a culture of self curation, on-topic discussion, and a give-and-take approach to posting and commenting. There was a sense of something special in reading someone else's words, like a letter from an old friend.
Maybe it was the sense of discovery? Even Craigslist has the kind of vibe of "you never quite know what you are going to find" in both a good and a bad way.
Everything now has become so short-form and algorithmic. There has been a big pivot towards video too, which I have never gotten into. Maybe it's too real? On SN I am clearly not private, but I am not quite 100% my "government name" either.
So what is the big idea? Am I not the only one who feels that in the world of social media there is this shallow fucking performance routine that everyone is putting on to drive those engagement metrics and collect followers?
How do you guys feel about this?
Stacker News sits in this goldilocks zone for me. It is still a kind of subculture and there is a gateway to entry - you have to kinda know something about Bitcoin to function here.
Maybe what I am feeling is more broadly the death of subcultures? People have been talking about this for decades, I even interviewed a guy who wrote a book about it.
It seems that now instead of tending to a garden of contributors in the "in-group", it is all about those eyeballs - any eyeballs.
Everywhere else online I see the psychology and click-bait traits trying to play its little tricks, I see those fucking AI tell-tale signs "its not A, it's B" and of course the EM dash.
Hacker News still has some value for me, but it has its own kind of retardation going on when it comes to RealPolitik and Bitcoin and creative stuff.
As for "news" I enjoy reading Zero Hedge from time to time for the latest, but it can be hit and miss.
Where to from here?Where to from here?
Before anyone says Nostr let's be clear it is a protocol not a community. I think it is interesting tech to build a community on but fundamentally you still need the "place and the occasion".
I have my writing and essays and a bunch of other random things I am interested in sharing, but sometimes not quite sure how it fits. Not all of us here are going to be into the exact same things (maybe this is where territories come in?) but there is so much potential.
The reward and incentive mechanism of having to pay sats to post is one of the things that is keeping this place honest I think, without resorting to the kind of bullshit gatekeeping that happens on Hacker News.
I really need to thank @k00b @sox @Scoresby and all the contributors for this. I love this place, it feels like my home on the internet. I had a good chat with k00b a while back about these questions and more.
This is just an open letter, but like, what do you all think?
Where else do you guys still get value from on the "internet"? What are some of your other favourite places that you would be willing to share?
There are still cool subcultures. One of my favorite is Chessbrah, founded by two Canadian GMs who mix chess with gaming and music and stream on Kick pretty much 24/7. They are audience funded. The community buys subs to support the channel.
I agree Stacker news is one of the best places on the Internet. For me, SN, Nostr, Chessbrah Kick, YouTube and occasionally Reddit, are pretty much the only Internet other than private group chats on Telegram and Signal. Oh and some Podcasts, I suppose, yours included.
For news on the war in middle east Aljazeera is not bad.
The Guardian is also sometimes worth a look.
Both do not just report events but provide some background context and analysis.
I feel your pain -.-
the internet makes people money now, it's an industry. Contribution and engagement then is quantitative, not qualitative.
Numbers and eyeballs, "any eyeballs".
I think the time we're nostalgic for was the period before the pipeline was laid.
Part of what I enjoy about SN is the variety. Your posts fit just fine.
My general impression is that most humans are becoming a bit more soft and conplacent than usual and I hope the trend turns soon.
I have found SNs rather hostile to dislogue on different viewpoints for example my themes of highlighting Chinas relative economic success via its mixed economy, and attempts to raise the issue of The Greater Israel Project and finally the hypocrisy of many stackers who preach Bitcoin but don't actually use it here on SNs because its too inconvenient!
Raising these topics has not generally achieved a reasonable dialogue but instead a combination of passive aggressive downzapping and more generally persistent trolling and evasion of the actual issues raised.
That said I do agree with the OP that SNs is better than the other options now available.
At least on SNs there appears to be no overt censorship...which on reddit for example seems to be chronic.
Some are very hostile to you, for some reason. I enjoy your viewpoint, though. I appreciate that you continue to post here.
Mainly SN and Nostr, snooping a bit on X but never post there
Im grateful to have Bitcoin in my psyche, otherwise don't know where I'd be
Have you looked at pubky ?? John Carvalho was designing a rival to Nostr and was shilling it last year, not sure if it's still going and you need an invite code to get in, or you did
Apparently relays are not the move according to him
I never bothered with it, but if you're looking??
Thanks I didn't know about Pubky, I found these links:

Don't forget all of bitcoin discourse, from which usually nothing but circlejerk arises.
Time to start thinking about sociocybernetics, reading Luhmann and Nietzsche rather than just resting on our laurels about being "right"?
I love SN too. I just wish we had more people joining and engaging.
My dream for Stacker News is that we can find the others who long for that old internet. If bitcoin is the main hurdle, then we should grow as bitcoin becomes more normalized.
One of the places I really enjoy on nostr is Fountain. Being able to start a conversation from a comment on someone's podcast that can continue on other clients is really cool.
Why does it matter? It’s not yours.
I mean, I don't want to go back there but I don't want someone picking up my old username and scamming others with it. X is rife with imposters and scam accounts.
Keet it clear where people can find you in a trustworthy place like here as your example, nostr, owned server, places where you want to be. Holding your nym there just show that you want a bridge to comeback, fair enough, but speak it clear.
Absolutely, your post totally resonates. The web is dead, and nothing is replacing it. I'm personally investing in real-life connections and spaces, but I very much miss the "old" social media, chat groups and forums. Also, extra zap for your username
The feeling of potential really resonates with me. I have posted a lot of weird things on this site and I think if it's something you put effort into it's always worth a shot. I long ago gave up trying to predict what kind of post would spark a conversation.
The part of the internet that most gave me the feeling I think you're getting at was blogs, but blogs can be hard to find and the good ones are practically life's work for people.
I've enjoyed your past long-form posts and I'd love to see more.
Perhaps if we zoom out see and the entire balance of power in the world is changing- the wests centuries old dominance over not just technology, economy and politics but narratives as well is in decline.
If this is the case then many will be struggling with this shift in power balance.
Many find it hard to reconcile what is going on with their ideological and cultural biases.
In such a situation confusion and chaos is to be expected.
I hate the ad spawnin I can’t even see stufff wanna see more than half the time
I recently played a game that really stoked those feelings of old internet nostalgia: #1483197
I think stackers are pretty receptive to a wide range of topics, provided they're thoughtfully written.
If you're writing for a territory without an active founder to boost and engage with your posts, though, it's a bit easier for the post to disappear into the ether. In that case, strategic timing of when you post it or boost it could also get more eyeballs (weekday mornings in US time zones seem best)
